Tooting & Mitcham United March 2019 Review

New Signing David Carty

Tooting & Mitcham United FC had a tough March, but are still in it to win it! Here’s Roger Butcher with the latest...

The team has slipped up a bit in March and consequently, any chance of promotion has been reduced to the realms of mathematical. It was always going to be a tough few weeks has we had games against all of our promotion rivals.

In terms of performance away to Ware, it was a good one, and normally a 2-2 draw would be considered a good result. Leon Lalor-Dell scored twice in to give us a 2-1 lead at half time, but we were unable to hold on and Ware scored a deserved equaliser. So whilst a draw would normally be a good point won, it was really victories that we needed.

The next game was at home to Westfield, who were probably our most immediate rivals for the final play off position, currently occupied by them. And three points were imperative. We started off brightly and just before half time, Westfield were reduced to 10 men. But instead of taking control of the game we lost our way a bit and went behind to a second half penalty. Although Danny Bassett scored a last minute equaliser, there was a feeling of too little too late.

Now needing other results to go our way, we faced a tough away trip to second place Bracknell.  We started the better of the 2 teams and took the lead through debutant David Carty. And although we missed a penalty chance to increase our lead, there was still a feeling that we were on top and could grab three important points. However, an inexplicable 2nd half collapse where we conceded a penalty, a comical own goal and were reduced to 10 men, sent us to a 3-1 defeat.

17 Goals for Danny Bassett

We finally managed to play our oft-postponed game at Molesey and stormed into a 3-0 lead at half time with goals from Coleman, Carty and Bassett. But once again we suffered a 2nd half calamity conceding 2 goals from set pieces followed by our 10th red card of the season as Peter Wedgeworth received his marching orders.  In this case, though, we managed to hold on to the lead to run out 3-2 winners.

The red card malaise which has affected our season so badly is perhaps more confusing, since we have also received the fewest yellow cards in our division this season. Playing with 10 men, and also suffering from multiple suspensions has definitely cost us points.

Our next game was also billed as a crunch play off decider with Cheshunt, but in truth we were a bit too far back down the table for that. And we didn’t really play our best and went down 2-1 with Danny Bassett scoring our goal with his 16th strike of the season. A pretty decent return from someone who has had to adapt to playing in a number of different positions this season, not just as a striker.

We finished off the month with an away trip to Uxbridge, with Danny Bassett on target again in a 1-0 win. That was his 4th goal in 5 games. So we go into the last month of the season 4 points off the play off zone with 5 games remaining. Not an impossible task by any means, but the games are running out.

But although the promotion dream seems to have hit the buffers recently, we are still in the Surrey Senior Cup and have our semi final away to Banstead on Tuesday 2nd April.

And finally a word about our under-23 team who sit proudly at the top of the Bostik development league, and need just one further point to seal the title with 2 games remaining. They had the chance to clinch the title with a win at home to Ramsgate on Monday 1st April but could only manage a 0-0 draw which has left them tantalisingly close. Why not come along to one of their games to give them the support they deserve, and maybe see a star of the future? They have one further home game versus Sittingbourne on Monday 15th April. Admission for this game is free
