Visit My Mosque Day in Tooting and Balham

Visit My Mosque Day in Tooting and Balham

Visit My Mosque Day takes place this Sunday 3rd March, 12pm to 4pm, at the Tooting Islamic Centre, 145 Upper Tooting Road, London SW17 7TJ and Balham Mosque, 47A Balham High Road, London SW12 9AW.

This is a great opportunity to learn about what goes on in the mosque, see the newly refurbished building and enjoy generous hospitality from community members.

Arshad Daud, Vice Chairman of the mosque, writes:

“We will once again be participating in a national Open Day initiative, organised by the Muslim Council of Britain that has become affectionately known as Visit My Mosque.

“Both our Centres in Balham and Tooting are open throughout the year to our local communities and the general public at large. However, the Visit My Mosque Open Day (which for us, is in its fourth successive year) is an opportunity for us to formally invite our neighbours and local communities to come and share some refreshments with us over a short presentation and exhibition to find out more about our mosque and our religion, Islam.

“This year is a tad more special for us, because we are celebrating 50 years of serving our community. Balham Mosque was conceived in 1969 by a handful of local Muslims that wanted to create a space where the community could come to pray, learn and provide support to one another. 50 years on, the trust has bloomed into two vibrant community centres and four affiliate schools in and around the Balham and Tooting areas.

“During the forthcoming Open Day, you will get the opportunity to learn a bit more about the history of Balham Mosque & Tooting Islamic Centre as well as view some of the many exhibits we will have on display which seek to provide you with an insight into Islam. You will have the opportunity to ask questions of our Imams and community leaders as well as witness some of the work we have been doing over the past 12 months, to demonstrate our passion to "Live Islam" in our locality and provide our community with the services and support they need.

“As part of the overall Muslim Council of Britain initiative, we expect more than 150 mosques across the United Kingdom will also be opening their doors on the same day to share common understandings and values to provide an opportunity for people of faith and non-faith to openly discuss Islam and Muslims.

“Our previous Open Days have been very well received. It is a privilege for us to share the activities we undertake at each of our Centres, to accommodate for the 1,000 plus worshippers that attend each mosque, with our neighbours and wider communities.

“We look forward to welcoming and connecting with both old and new friends, to share more about who we are and why we do what we do. So if you're passing by one of our centres and ever wondered what was happening inside, then pop down on Sunday the 3rd of March to bless us with your company!”
