Tooting & Mitcham United February 2019 Review

Tooting & Mitcham United February 2019 Review

Tooting & Mitcham United FC had a fantastic unbeaten run in February. Can they keep it up for the rest of season? Here’s Roger Butcher with the latest...

February has been kind to Tooting as we have come through the month undefeated with 4 wins and 2 draws. We have climbed up to 6th which is our highest place so far this season, and are now just one place outside the play off places. Hopefully we have hit a bit of form just at the right time with a few big games against our promotion rivals coming up.

We started off with a fairly routine 3-0 win over bottom side Egham, although we had to wait until the 50th minute for Jordan Wilson to open the scoring and calm a few nerves. Dominic Morgan-Griffiths added to the tally before Wilson scored his 2nd of the game to seal the victory.

The next game was away to Bedfont Sports and a difficult game was made much harder when Saidou Khan added to Tooting’s increasing red card tally this season following an incident early in the 2nd half. It was a big blow for the team as we were dominating play up until that point and were unlucky not to be leading.  However, another great effort by the 10 men led to Danny Bassett grabbing the winner with just a couple of minutes remaining. A tremendous effort by the 10 men, and who knows how vital those 2 additional points might be at the end of the season.

Unfortunately, we were a bit below par in our next game at home to Northwood. We were perhaps fortunate to take a first half lead with a goal from Saidou Khan. However, we were unable to hold on to the lead and Northwood got a deserved equaliser. Although the game ended all square, we did manage to maintain our little unbeaten run, and we also picked up a point whilst not really being at our best.

Manager Ashley Bosah sought to boost his squad ahead of the final run in, and brought in ex-Tooting favourite Dan Summers.  Summers enjoyed a tremendous season in front of goal in 2014/15 when he scored 36 times. Will he be the catalyst to improve results going in to the last quarter of the season?

Summers made his first appearance as he came off the bench to score a late penalty against near neighbours Colliers Wood Town, as we progressed to the semi final of the Surrey Senior Cup with a scoreline of 3-1. It was a tight affair as Colliers Wood belied their position in the division below us took the lead in the first half.  An improved 2nd half performance saw us score through Stefan Ilic and Saidou Khan before Dan Summers’ late cameo sealed the win.

Our play off credentials were severely tested when we travelled to 2nd place Marlow in the next game, with a depleted squad due to suspensions and injuries. Isaiah Jones, fresh from a trial at Middlesbrough opened the scoring with a superb solo goal on the half hour. However, things were to get worse for him and Tooting just before half time when a tumultuous last couple of minutes saw Jones sent off along with a Marlow player, followed by a Marlow equaliser. The game remained 1-1 till the end, and it must be considered a good point in the context of the season as a whole.

Our tough run of games continued with a home game against one of our fellow promotion contenders, Waltham Abbey. Once again, fielding a slightly understrength team, we got off to a great start, with young striker Hady Ghandour scoring twice in the first 15 minutes. This time we held on until the 81st minute when some intense pressure from our opponents brought them back into the game at 2-1. This time we were strong enough to hold on to the lead and climb one place to 6th.

We are still in a good position to go for promotion, but the next month will prove crucial as we play the teams that currently occupy 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. So if you haven’t been to a game yet, maybe now is the time to give it a try as the team would appreciate any additional support as we approach a tough run of games.

Although most of the focus is put on the first team, the under 23 development squad is having an excellent season.  They are currently unbeaten with just 5 games remaining.

Ghandour and Jones have worked their way up to become first team regulars this season. Their next home game is scheduled for Monday 11th March against Sittingbourne. Once again, this talented group of youngsters would also appreciate any new support.

And finally, the first team had a morale boosting 2-0 victory in a friendly match against Crystal Palace U23s. Morgan-Griffiths and Lalor-Dell scored the goals, while back up keeper, Justice Owusu saved a second half penalty.
