Marking Remembrance Day in Tooting

Marking Remembrance Day in Tooting

Remembrance Sunday

Ed Veale, Pastoral Assistant at St Nicholas Church in Tooting, on how the church will be marking Remembrance Day this month.

Remembrance Day – on 11 November 2018 – this year marks one hundred years since the Armistice ending the First World War. Countless lives were given in both world wars, including soldiers from Tooting, and it remains a precious British commemoration that we remember the fallen.

At St Nicholas this year, we invite the Tooting community to two special events to mark the Armistice centenary:

Armistice 100: Remembrance Tea
On Saturday 10 November, from 3-5pm, our church building will be open for an afternoon tea, with displays and presentations of photographs and poetry from the time of the First World War. Our peaceful Remembrance Garden will be open for visitors for quiet reflection, our church tower bell will be tolled for each of those in Tooting named on the parish memorial who sacrificed their lives; and there will be poppy-making craft activities. The Tea is free of charge, though there will be a collection for the work of the Royal British Legion, and is part of dozens of events across the country.

Remembrance Sunday Service
On Sunday 11 November, at 10.45am, we will host an Act of Remembrance and the playing of the Last Post, as part of our morning service. Our usual children’s groups for those 14 and under will be running during the service, whilst in the main gathering, we will reflect on the timeless words of Christ, from the gospel of John: “Greater love has no-one than this, that he lays down his life for his friends.”

Please do join us this November and do contact the church on 020 7767 8033 or via if you have any queries.
