Summer Activities in London from Jimmy Asher Foundation

Summer Activities in London from Jimmy Asher Foundation

This month, Iman Ogoo, Senior Project Coordinator at Jimmy Asher Foundation talks about all the fantastic youth outreach work that the foundation has been doing across London over the summer.

The JAF Summer programme has nearly come to an end after weeks of fun activities for young people to participate in during the school break.

In Merton, we had four weeks of various activities at Pollards Hill Youth Centre and the neighbouring Phipps Bridge Youth Centre. For the first 2 weeks, Artist & Illustrator Judith Lawton was the tutor for our customised clothing workshops at both venues, showing the young people how to customise T-shirts using various art mediums including the ‘Sharpie Tie Dye’ technique. We also had Coach Devaniel Gayle delivering our renowned B2B Basketball Coaching at the centres, training 11-19 year olds in our unique format. Weeks 3 and 4 began with fun photography workshops with TSA Studios and the All 4 The Youth Movement, where the children took photos of each other, carefully selecting one to add creative text captions using an app.

Coach First ran our youth boxing sessions which proved to be very popular with the older teens. The vigorous workouts and professional training had the budding boxers working up a real sweat!

Our Radio Broadcasting workshop at Pollards Hill Youth Club focused on podcasts this time, with the participants honing their presentation skills as well as thoroughly discussing potential show topics and how they would deliver them.

We had more B2B Basketball action at the Black Prince Trust Hub in Lambeth with Black Prince Trust Hub and also at the Roupell Park Estate MUGA in Brixton Hill with Coach Oliver Ladlow.

On the other side of London, in Haringey, Coach Chris Hall of the London Boxing Academy led our 5-week Youth Boxing programme at the Bruce Grove Youth Space. We had great feedback on Coach Chris’s performance.

We had the pleasure of running our first workshops at a boarding school this summer too – The American School In England (TASIS) based in Thorpe Village, Surrey, held a 3-day basketball training camp for their pupils run by Coach Devaniel.

As pupils return to school in the following few weeks, our term-time schedule will begin in September, including a variety of after school activities in youth centres across London.

Note: Since writing this blog post, the tutor of our customised clothing workshops, Artist and Illustrator Judith Lawton unexpectedly passed away. The Jimmy Asher Foundation is honoured to have worked with Judith and send our condolences to her family and loved ones.
