Korfball

Introducing a new monthly blog from Tooting Bec Korfball Club! Korfball is one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports and there’s a fantastic team right here in Tooting! Over to Lisa to explain...

Looking for something new? Want to have fun, keep fit and meet new people? Then why not try korfball and join the Bec family!

After a long summer of holidays, outdoor tournaments and Summer Sessions down on Tooting Bec Common, Bec Korfball Club is about to move into full flow for the imminent indoor season.  If you want to be a part of the Bec family then we’d love you to come down to one of our open trials. There’s a spot in one of our teams for everyone and it’s up to our coaches to help you find the one that is best suited for you within Bec!

...but hang on, what even is korfball? Here’s a small background about our club and the sport…

Founded in 1948, Bec Korfball Club has been promoting the sport of korfball in South London for over 70 years. It is now one of the largest and most successful korfball clubs in the UK with five senior teams and three junior teams that play at a variety of levels ranging from the very top league in the country to the more sociable London leagues. As a result, the club is lucky to have over 60 active members on its books who love the competition, camaraderie and enjoyment that the club brings to their lives.

The club currently runs a variety of training sessions each week in venues around Tooting, Brixton and Clapham that cater to players of all abilities, from seasoned internationals to complete beginners. We pride ourselves on always welcoming new members and strive to provide the perfect environment in which to enjoy this unique sport.

Korfball is a fun and exciting sport that anyone can play. It bears similarities to netball and basketball in that the aim is to throw a ball into a basket, but there are a number of rules that mean it is quite different to both.

Uniquely, it is the world's only exclusively mixed-sex sport. This means that all korfball teams must always have four male and four female players on the court at all times. Each player is then in a duel with an opponent of the same sex and must use their speed, agility and skill to break free to shoot and score. This creates a fast, dynamic sport that requires teamwork and cooperation to achieve success.
