Tooting's Young Entrepreneurs: CJ Odeleye

Tooting's Young Entrepreneurs: CJ Odeleye

2018-02-28
| by Editor | Posted in News, Business & Finance

Continuing our series featuring some of Tooting’s great young entrepreneurs, we introduce CJ Odeleye, owner of accountancy startup, I Do Accounts and the creative mind behind the growithcj business advisory programme.

CJ’s passion is helping small businesses and individuals navigate the jargon-filled world of accounting and finance. He provides them with the tools they need to set up their business, become effective bookkeepers and clearly understand the financial health of their company.

This passion stemmed from studying Accountancy at GSCE. “I was inspired by my teacher who turned what could have been a very dull subject into something very interesting”, says CJ. “The way he explained things clearly, without jargon and emphasised the importance of a solid accounting knowledge for life in general made me want to turn this into a career. I decided to go straight on to an AAT Accountancy qualification, before doing a degree in Accounting at Metropolitan Uni and then straight into a job!”

It was during his role at Dementia UK where CJ studied for 3 years to complete his chartered accountancy exams. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, working 9 to 5 and then in the library until closing time, but well worth it in the end!”, says CJ.

CJ is currently the Finance Manager for both the Trident Business Centre and Business Launchpad, who provide mentoring to the young entrepreneurs behind startups such as Macs Cafe and Digilab Tooting to help them grow and become successful businesses.

“Inspired by this, I recently launched I Do Accounts, a professional finance agency specialised in providing accountancy and bookkeeping services to individuals, start-ups and small businesses. One of my passions is making financial knowledge accessible to everyone and with this in mind I recently started growithcj a business advisory programme aimed at supporting those having difficulties achieving the business growth they desire, by providing financial coaching and practical business advice and support through ongoing seminars, workshops as well as a 1-2-1 drop-in service - "business financials health clinic".

“I want to make sure that every new business can answer the most important questions before starting out. Questions such as ‘should I set up a limited company?’, ‘how do I pay myself?’ and ‘what should I pay myself?’! Then going forward, I want people to understand basic accounting principles such as what their financial statements mean, so that they clearly know where they stand and can provide clear information to potential investors if need be. If people want me to eventually look after their accounts for them, I want them to understand what it is I'm doing and what they’re paying me for!”

All of these subjects and more will be covered in CJ’s forthcoming series of workshops on registering your business and understanding cashflow forecast to be held at the 3 Space Bermondsey, starting on 1st March 2018.

Stay tuned to Tooting Daily PRSS for more info as well as a series of videos (a brief taster below!) that CJ is producing in conjunction with Digilab Tooting, where he’ll provide valuable accounting advice to help keep your business on the best possible financial path!
