What's a Bourda Bazaar? Find out this weekend!

Guyana Speaks will be holding a Bourda Bazaar and fundraiser on Sunday, 10th December, 2pm to 5pm at The Classic in Tooting Bec.

Guyana Speaks is an initiative made up of four people – Rod Westmaas, Ra Hendricks, Juanita Cox and Tafawa Ntune. The group holds events (generally on the last Sunday of every month) aimed at showcasing the best of Guyana, its people, its culture and its history. The forum provides an opportunity for members of the Guyanese community to come together and to build relationships. It also aims to reach out to educate and inform a new generation of British children who are at risk of losing touch with their Guyanese heritage.

The Bourda Bazaar is based on a famous outdoor market in Guyana, the atmosphere of which the Guyana Speaks team hope to recreate. The key features of the event are live music from Guyanan flautist Keith Waithe, and folk songs from Seetal Gurprashad. A wide range of traditional Guyanese food from Conkie to Chana will be available for sale, as will a wide range of Guyanese products. The bazaar will also include a small art exhibition including the work of sculptor George ‘Fowokan’ Kelly, as well as artwork by Rebecca Sharples. The event will be opened by the High Commissioner of Guyana, H. E. Hamley Case

The Bourda Bazaar is a departure from the usual Guyana Speaks monthly discussion forum. The main aim is to range funds for the children of Wakapoa through charging £1 for entry fee, as well as holding a silent auction, a ‘guess the weight of the cake’ competition and a raffle.

The event is welcome to everyone, and Guyana Speaks looks forward to welcoming you.
