Immersive Learning in Wandsworth

Immersive Learning in Wandsworth

The second in a regular series of blogs from Share (who’s Community Garden is located in the grounds of Springfield University Hospital), sharing their news and events with Tooting. This month – all about immersive learning.

It probably comes as no surprise to anyone that we all have different learning styles. For some of us pictures and visual media works best while others can process the written word or numbers better.

At Share Community, we provide training and employment support for disabled adults. A lot of the people we support have learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs – or usually a combination of these. So finding the right learning style for each person is a major focus of how we teach at Share.

One of the teaching tools we use is our Immersive Learning Centre, based at our headquarters in Battersea. This immersive learning space is a digital, interactive room that provides surround video and sound, with an interactive floor, that allows us to recreate any environment to aid learning.

Whether it is a garden, an exotic beach, Clapham Junction Station or the aisles of our local supermarket, we are able to use our immersive learning space to recreate ‘real world’ scenarios to prepare our students to deal with situations they might otherwise find challenging. This is particularly important for those with learning disabilities and autism for whom the hubbub of everyday life can be especially overwhelming.

Our aim is to teach practical skills that will help our students become more independent and reach their potential, supporting them to become integral members of the communities within which they live.

Share Community is a registered charity based in Wandsworth that provides training and employment support for disabled adults, including those with learning disabilities, autism, physical/sensory impairments and mental health needs.

We teach catering, digital skills, and life and basic skills at our facilities in Battersea, and horticulture at our 2.5-acre garden in Tooting, based within the grounds of Springfield University Hospital. In addition, we provide a range of programmes aimed at personal development, and health and wellbeing, such as yoga, zumba, creative writing and music.

We work with people across the London. Students are usually referred to us by their professional support network (eg, social workers), their family/carers or people can refer themselves.
