The secret garden we want to shout about!

The secret garden we want to shout about!

The first in a regular series of blogs from the Share Community Garden in the grounds of Springfield University Hospital, sharing their news and events with Tooting.

This secret garden in Tooting is about to be a secret no more! Over the past 25 years or so, the Share Garden, based in the grounds of Springfield University Hospital has been looked after by students studying horticulture at Share Community, a charity that provides training and employment support for disabled adults.

During that time, the garden has been transformed from 2.5 acres of essentially open pasture (where sheep roamed apparently!) to the beautiful garden you see today, full of herbaceous borders, fruit trees, vegetable patches, polytunnels and a heated greenhouse brimming with plants for sale, all lovingly grown and nurtured by our students.

So this summer we’d like to invite the local community to come along and discover one of London’s hidden green spaces. We have a number of events taking place in June and we’d love to see you there!

Sunday 18th June 2017, 10am to 5pm
The Share Garden is Open for Open Garden Squares Weekend, with plants for sale, a pop-up café with naughty but nice cakes, scones and refreshments, all lovingly prepared by our catering students, and ‘growing words’ poetry from our Poet in Residence, Andrea Robinson. Weekend tickets are £13 if bought in advance or £15 during the weekend, which allows you access to more than 200 gardens over the weekend. Or you can buy a single garden ticket for £4 on the day. If you visit the Share Garden and three other ‘hidden gem’ gardens over the weekend, you have a chance to win afternoon tea at Duck Island Cottage in St James’s Park. Find out more at http://www.opensquares.org/hiddengems. More information about the Share Garden is available at http://bit.ly/OGSW2017

Tuesday 20th June 2017, 11.30am to 3pm – Share Summer Garden Party
With lunch kindly provided by the Tooting Business Network (TBN) in association with the Khalsa Centre in Tooting. The TBN is made up of a number of local businesses on the Upper Tooting Road that have supported Share for more than 10 years. This event embodies the spirit of what community is all about, the generosity of which knows no bounds. The event is free but please do register so we can make sure that we can cater for everyone. Find out more or register at http://bit.ly/SummerGardenParty2017

Thursday 22nd June 2017, 5.30pm to 8.30pm – Evening in the Garden
A fundraising and networking event, with midsummer drinks and canapés complete with steel band to bring a little taste of the Caribbean to Tooting. As well as horticulture, Share provides training in catering, so this event is all about showing the great work our students are doing in the Share Kitchen based in Battersea. The event is free but donations would be welcome, and please do register so we can make sure that we can cater for all our guests. Find out more or register at http://bit.ly/ShareEITG2017

Plants are sold year round, so if you can’t make one of these events, do pop into the garden from 9.30am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, to grab yourself a bargain and take a little piece of the Share Garden home with you. The Share Garden is a walled garden based in the grounds of Springfield University Hospital, next to Building 15: http://bit.ly/ShareGardenDirections

At Share, community is everything and we believe everyone has something to offer others. We work hard to help our students towards independence, supporting them to reach their potential and achieve their life goals.

Share Community is a registered charity based in Wandsworth that provides training and employment support for disabled adults, including those with learning disabilities, autism, physical/sensory impairments and mental health needs.
