70/30 Campaign Announces Launch of Tooting Group in Parliament

UK charity WAVE Trust celebrated its new 70/30 Campaign with a reception in Parliament last week.

The 70/30 Campaign is driven by an ever-growing network of volunteers dedicated to reducing child abuse and neglect by 70% by the year 2030.

70/30 recently announced the launch of local groups across the country, including Tooting. The launch event, hosted by Lord Chris Fox, saw top politicians and UK charity representatives meet with 70/30 grassroots campaigners from across the UK. Former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg opened the evening and showed his support for WAVE’s primary preventive work and its 70/30 goal. Mr Clegg said, “WAVE has brought science and rigour and policy to something which intuitively everybody knows is true…as parents, as individuals, as members of society that damage done in the earliest point in the life of any individual is damage which tends to manifest itself in evermore distressing ways later in life.

“So much of what we do as a Government is about trying to remedy problems which we failed to tackle earlier. The benefits of addressing issues at the earliest point in a child’s life are potentially huge”.

Nick Clegg and Rob Robinson

Axminster Ambassador and Group Coordinator, Rob Robinson shared his candid account of his childhood experiences of both abuse and neglect, and highlighted the effect such experiences had on his life. He said, "I spent my whole life looking for the 70/30 campaign, because it should’ve been there for my mum and dad, and it’s a real shame that they weren’t there because we had to go through all of this, so that we can start campaigning now.

"If everyone gives just a little bit to this work, we will stop child abuse for our children and for our grandchildren. We all have a role to play, it's up to us now to make it happen".
