Have you heard of BATCA and all the good work they are doing in our community?

The Balham and Tooting Community Association (BATCA) was set up in February 2006 with the aim of encouraging closer relations between all sections of the local community in the wake of the tragic events of 7/7/05.

It uniquely draws together faith bodies such as Churches Together, the Tooting Islamic Centre and Balham Mosque, Sikh and Hindu bodies and local businesses, voluntary organisations and public sector bodies such as The Metropolitan Police, The London Fire Brigade and St George’s Hospital. The BATCA’s membership is a representative of all sides of the community.

BATCA receives active support from our local MPs and councillors, they have had much positive coverage in the local press and they take an interest in all local issues.

They organise lots of events throughout the year that brings people together and for all to enjoy.

BATCA Community Awards are given to outstanding volunteers who work for the common good at a celebratory event. There have been four sets of awards given in the past nine years. Last year’s was a huge success and a further round will take place this November.

BATCA’s summer Community Fun Days are held jointly with Gatton Muslim Primary School, and St Augustine’s Church in Broadwater Road Tooting. Everyone in the community has a great day out, with rides, stalls, multicultural food and entertainment, and substantial funds are raised for St George’s Hospital and other local charities.

The Multi-faith ceremony of peace and remembrance, is a candlelit open air, multi-faith ceremony of peace and remembrance. It involves five faiths and is held every autumn outside Tooting Broadway tube station. The 2016 ceremony was held from 6-7pm on 22nd September.

There are cricket and football tournaments throughout the year. Many teams from diverse backgrounds have taken part in the cricket and football tournaments over the past few years.
