||Woo-hoo! It’s summer! But does wearing summer attire fill you with dread? It needn’t. This month, Anna Mackay from We Are Fit Attitude has partnered with Gus Grima, Nutritionist at Be Marvellous (based in Tooting) with proven tips that you can incorporate, alongside your Get F-Hiit for Summer fitness routine that will have you delighting in your healthy, fit body, mind and spirit.|
If we want our bodies to look and feel great, then we have to focus on what’s going on inside. ‘You are what you eat’ is a well-used, often overlooked, phrase but it is so true. Think of it more as ‘you become what you eat’. You need to put the right fuel into your body for it to perform and look the way you want it to. You might look ok from the outside, but inside your energy is yo-yo-ing, your moods are all over the place and you keep getting brain fog!
By increasing the quality of the food you eat, you can change this state. So Gus (pictured below) recommends you “Count Chemicals Not Calories” – when we eat processed, ready-made food, it’s like eating toxins that have no place in our bodies. Your liver is the organ that deals with breaking these down. And what happens when the liver is overwhelmed with trying to process chemicals and toxins? It stores them as fat.
Why? Because that stabilizes the chemicals and toxins and stops them damaging your body. AND your body will do all it can to hold onto that fat because once that fat is burnt, all the dangerous chemicals and toxins get released into general circulation again where your poor, overworked liver has no time or energy to process them.
So, cut back on junk food and processed food. The easiest way to do this is to eat real food and follow these three things to help love your liver:
- Start the day with a cup of warm water and fresh lemon juice
- Add a green smoothie a day as a snack to restore balance and alkalinity to the body which really nourishes your liver, as well as cleansing your body.
- Take a plate-of-greens-a-day challenge: Eat at least a full big plate of these vegetables every day: choose from kale, sprouts, asparagus, rocket, chard, cabbage, spinach, broccoli…they all support your liver and help it detox.
If you’re really serious about deep diving into getting ready for summer, you could do a 14 day cleanse which involves cutting out certain foods from gluten and dairy to alcohol and caffeine for 7 days, giving your digestion and liver a really good break, filling your body with foods full of nutrients it loves and then slowly re-introducing foods so that you can see what effect they have on you. This will not only improve your energy and clean up your body, but will also give you invaluable insight into which foods suit your unique body type and which don’t.
